Even if you plan on pursuing an on-campus degree, you might need/want to take an online course at some point. Some courses might only be available online as well, so it's always best to prepare yourself as much as possible. Below are some tips and information to learn more about online courses.
- Online courses are great for students that work full-time, live a distance away from campus, or have other fulltime obligations in life.
- Students taking some in-person courses might want to add more to their credit-load, but can't fit in more meeting times to their already busy schedule. Taking an online course is a convenient way to add in another course without having to worry about making it work with your schedule. Online courses are self-paced, so students can work on them whenever they can fit it into their schedule.
- Online courses don't have any required meeting times, so they are pretty flexible when it comes to scheduling.
- Students taking online courses need to prepare themselves for a serious time commitment. Online courses may be more flexible, but that does not mean they鈥檙e less work.
- You are required to do a variety of things: read, watch videos, listen to pre-recorded lectures, participate in discussion posts, and/or complete any projects/assignments/quizzes/tests without the instructor actually present to guide you, like they would in a classroom throughout the week.
- A typical online 3-credit course requires (generally) 6 or more hours of work per week. If you are a full-time student in 15-credits, you can expect to spend around 30 to 45 hours per week working on your courses.
- Online course experiences can also vary depending on the course and the instructor; some courses might be more discussion based than others and some professors might upload pre-recorded lectures to make up part of their course materials, whereas others might include links to various videos, articles, etc.
- Be able to communicate effectively and clearly through writing.

                                             - Without any face-to-face interactions, it is imperative that students feel comfortable with their writing skills.
- It can sometimes be difficult to convey emotion, tone, and intention when there aren't in-person interactions, so be intentional and aware of your responses.

- Be self-motivated and self-disciplined.

                                             - While online courses can feel freeing and flexible, the student is in charge of creating a plan with effective time-management skills to stay on top of the course.

- Be open when it comes to discussing your struggles/concerns with the instructor or
                                             your advisor.

                                             - If we don't know what's going on or how you're doing, we can't help!

- Be ready to commit the time needed for your course(s).

                                             - With no meeting times throughout the week, the student alone is resonsible for dedicating enough time to their course(s).
- Often times, many students say that online courses require more time than in-person courses and require more commitment.

- Have reliable access to the internet and a compatible device.

                                             - As an online student, all of your coursework will be online and you'll need to have reliable access to it.
- Often times, cell phones aren't able to load textbooks, online classrooms, or certain programs properly, so it is highly recommended that you have access to a computer.
